A grinder can look small next to an espresso machine while setting the height requirement for the whole station. Start with the brew method, then compare width, depth and height independently. A compact filter grinder does not automatically belong in an espresso setup.
This is a comparison of published specifications and their layout implications. We have not tested grind quality, retention, noise or durability. Use those separate questions when deciding whether a dimensionally plausible model is right for you.
Low cupboards favor a shorter body, with room above it
Fellow lists the Opus 2 at 26.7 cm high. Baratza lists the Encore ESP at 34 cm high and the Sette 270 at 41 cm high. These differences are substantial if you are working below a cabinet.
A 40 cm opening leaves 13.3 cm above the Opus 2’s published body, 6 cm above the Encore ESP, and is lower than the Sette 270 itself. Those are simple subtractions, not verified refill clearances. You still need to open a lid or lift a container, and your hand and bean bag need somewhere to go.

A narrow grinder can be surprisingly deep
The Ode Gen 2 is listed at 10.5 cm wide and 23.9 cm front-to-back. The Encore ESP is 13 cm wide and 15 cm deep. The Ode therefore saves 2.5 cm of width but uses 8.9 cm more depth in the published rectangular envelope.
That trade-off depends on the room you have. On a deep kitchen counter, width may dominate. On a shallow shelf, the deeper grinder may be harder to accommodate even though it looks slimmer from the front. Our comparison table lets you look at the axes side by side in inches or centimeters.
Match the grinder to the brew method
Fellow explicitly says the Ode Gen 2 is intended for brewed coffee and not espresso. Baratza positions the original Encore for filter brewing. This site labels both as filter references; neither appears as an espresso recommendation in the example setups.
The Encore ESP, Encore ESP Pro, Opus 2 and Sette 270 are the espresso-oriented options in this small collection. That classification comes from manufacturer descriptions, not from a comparative cup test. It does not establish that every setting, bean or accessory will work equally well.
The same footprint does not mean the same purchase
The Encore, Encore ESP and Encore ESP Pro all have a listed 13 × 15 × 34 cm envelope. Replacing one with another does not save published space. Their intended use and controls differ, so compare those differences instead of treating the newer or more expensive model as physically smaller.
Check standard and alternative hopper configurations separately. Our presets use the dimensions stated on the source pages. Removing or replacing a hopper can change the actual envelope, but a smaller dimension should come from your own measurement or an explicit specification for that configuration.
Remember the receiving cup
A grinder needs somewhere to dispense coffee. Check whether your portafilter fits the support arms or whether you will transfer grounds from a dosing cup. The Opus 2 page identifies its espresso cup as compatible with 54 mm and 58 mm portafilters; that is not a promise of direct compatibility with every machine.
Leave somewhere to set that cup down while holding the portafilter. This temporary use of space is easy to omit when you only draw the two appliance footprints. A preparation zone often contributes more to convenience than a very small reduction in grinder width.
Test a full station, not an isolated rectangle
Select a grinder in the planner and add the machine or your custom brewer measurements. The deeper item controls depth; the taller item controls height. Move the grinder off the counter in the tool to see whether that solves your actual constraint.
Before buying, confirm the exact generation and market. In September 2026, the original Fellow Opus product address redirected to Opus 2. Reusing old dimensions under the new product name would have produced a misleading comparison.
