EQUIPMENT DECISIONS

Choose a small espresso machine by the space it needs.

Before making an espresso-machine shortlist, identify the dimension you cannot change. It may be the width beside your sink, the depth of a cart, or the distance to an overhead cabinet. “Compact” is too broad to settle any of those questions.

Our equipment collection lists dimensions in a consistent width, depth and height order. It includes researched references rather than a complete market ranking. We have not tested brewing performance or physically measured these machines. The useful comparison here is their published size and the planning consequences.

When width is the limit

The Dedica Arte EC885M has a 5.9-inch published width in De’Longhi’s US manufacturer comparison chart. That makes it a narrow reference beside the Rancilio Silvia’s 23.5 cm, approximately 9.25 inches. The difference is about 3.35 inches of lateral counter space before you add a grinder or preparation zone.

This is an older Dedica model reference, with current availability unverified. Match EC885M rather than assuming that every machine named Dedica has identical dimensions. Check its source and access notes, including the date of the chart.

When depth is the limit

Rancilio lists the Silvia at 29 cm deep and the Silvia Pro X at 42 cm deep. The larger machine is only 1.5 cm wider, but 13 cm deeper. On a 45 cm shelf, the Pro X leaves only 3 cm before considering a working allowance or any projection not covered by the specification.

That makes these two machines useful examples of why a front-view photo is insufficient. The Silvia specification and Silvia Pro X specification each label the axes explicitly. Neither a short product name nor a narrow front establishes that a machine is suitable for a shallow console.

When the cupboard is the limit

Measure the lowest obstruction, then consider which appliance becomes the tallest part of the station. A relatively low espresso machine paired with a tall hopper grinder can make the grinder the limiting item. Changing only the machine may accomplish nothing.

Use the planner to compare the complete pair. Afterwards, verify tank removal and hopper opening with the appliance instructions. The tool’s three-inch default overhead allowance is an editable sketching choice. It is not a manufacturer-specified universal gap.

Choose the routine alongside the footprint

Decide whether you mainly drink straight espresso, milk drinks or filter coffee. Look at how the manufacturer describes temperature control, steaming and included accessories for the exact version. A feature-rich machine can consume additional space and budget that your routine does not need.

The LELIT Anna PL41TEM/110, for example, uses the LELIT57 accessory format in its 120 V technical sheet. That matters when buying a tamper or other accessories. Do not choose an accessory kit by its appearance alone, and do not assume a nominal diameter proves complete compatibility.

Handle conflicting specifications openly

We have withheld a Bambino preset because official page versions gave inconsistent dimension ordering. For Anna we retain the larger depth stated in the model-specific technical sheet and flag shorter dimensions found in older materials. Using a convenient smaller number without knowing what it excludes would make the tool less useful.

If a retailer listing, current product page and manual disagree, identify the exact regional model and ask which measurements include the handle or projecting parts. A dated, clearly identified source is more useful than an unexplained number presented as certain.

Make a shortlist you can check

Compare two or three options in the equipment table. Load each into the planner with the same grinder and allowances. Note which dimension fails first, then compare the real price, support options and accessories only among the layouts that remain plausible.

Before buying, match the regional voltage, follow the manual’s placement instructions and check the seller’s current availability. A green space calculation means the numbers fit. It does not replace the remaining checks.
